Winter School: Thermal history of basin-source systems

The research group of Sedimentary Geology and Basin Analysis of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences composed by Chiara Amadori, Andrea Di Giulio and Giovanni Toscani, is pleased to announce the International Winter School entitled

Thermal history of basin-source systems: techniques, modelling and applications”.
The School will be held on February 10th-15th 2020
at the historical Palazzo San Tommaso, Aula Bottigella (location: Piazza del Lino 1) and at Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences on February 15th (location: Via Ferrata 1).

All info and updates at http://phd-dsta.unipv.it/thermal/

The major purpose of the School is to share and discuss the modern knowledge of the basin-source system and its thermal evolution from sedimentological, structural, geochemical and modelling point of view. In addition, the need to understand the processes of basin formation and evolution is not purely academic as sedimentary basins are the location for hydrocarbon and water reserves and host a variety of important mineral deposits; as such they are the focus of intense industrial interest.

The School is targeted to PhD students and post-docs; also advanced master students are allowed to attend the lectures because we want the future graduates and early-stage researchers to develop all necessary skills appropriate to the demands of their research or professional career.
The School will provide 40h lectures by 11 key-note speakers from all over the World and a guided visit to the Eni’s scientific laboratories in San Donato Milanese (MI).

Our lecture program follows a “thermal philosophy”, in other words: how to study the evolution of a sedimentary basin through time-depth-temperature, and which are the best techniques to unravel those information. In detail, the first day is fully dedicated to present the fold-and-thrust belt and foreland basin systems to create the geological background for the next days, more focused on analytical techniques and numerical modelling.
Last but not least, the Winter School is sponsored by University of Pavia, Eni E&P and Earth and Environmental Sciences PhD Program.

Key works: basin analysis, fluid inclusions, organic matter, Illite/Smectite, (U-Th)/He, Ar-Ar dating, ZFT, AFT, thermal modelling, hydrocarbon.
