International Ocean Discovery Program
JOIDES Resolution Science Operator
From December 1st to January 30th, Alessio
Sanfilippo and Riccardo Tribuzio will take part to an oceanographic expedition
aimed to explore the interiors of the Indian Ocean, the IODP Expedition 360.
What is the IODP?
What is the IODP?
The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is an international research collaboration
that coordinates seagoing expeditions to study the history of the Earth recorded
in sediments and rocks beneath the ocean floor. TheJOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) operates the
scientific drillship JOIDES Resolution on behalf of the National Science Foundation.
Together with other 22 scientists from 12 different countries, they will drill core samples and collect measurements from the lower oceanic crust, on board of the research vessel JOIDES RESOLUTION (http://joidesresolution.org/).

With this
expedition our scientists seek to explore a deep portion of our planet, with
the ultimate aim to go “deep, as deep as possible”. Drilling beneath the ocean
is a unique chance to have direct proves of the rocks forming an inaccessible
portion of our planet, giving scientists a glimpse into Earth’s development.
Good trip and good luck!
Keep in touch directly from the ship.
